Thirty years ago Marvin Gaye sang the Star Spangled Banner before the NBA All-Star game in Oakland. In the years that have passed nobody else has been able to put their own unique and appropriate stamp on it the way he was able to. Yes there have been countless attempts, some of which have become infamous like Roseanne Barr’s shitty attempt or Carl Lewis’, which incited this reaction from former ESPN anchor Charlie Steiner. Even Robert Kelly gave it his best shot to impersonate Marvin Gaye’s rendition. Unfortunately for Mr. Kelly, the fans at the boxing event, and any R. Kelly defenders like myself this was a low point in his career.
Like a classic Disney movie, it doesn’t matter how much time passes the art still holds up. Thanks Marvin.
